We returned our sweaty selves to our hotel to freshen up then went across the street to enjoy a local delicacy (pancakes) for dinner. As an example of the high prices in Amsterdam, one pancake cost 8.50 euro and we also noticed that if you want ketchup for your fries it comes with an extra charge of 2 euro. Our evening schedule was a lover’s cruise on the canals. There were 14 couples on the cruise (one which brought their teenage son along) and each got their own booth. At each booth were a few chunks of cheese, a bowl of nuts and 2 bottles of wine (the 2009 Malbec was way too young so we drank up the Chenin Blanc and then refilled from another table’s bottle once we had finished). I guess we didn't need to eat so much at the pancake house.
The cruise travels up and down the canals with a very funny tour guide adding in various tidbits along the way. Most of the boats that we passed by had large groups of people out celebrating the victory. It was fun to see that many people our age hang out on boats and cruise the canal on summer evenings. Our tour included a guided walk through red light district on which we are fairly certain we didn't lose any members of our lovers cruise and then we got back on boat for more of the canal tour. We concluded that we were the most romantic and there should have been an award for that (yes, we did turn our canal cruise in to a competition of who was the most romantic couple...and for the record the one couple lost serious points for bringing their teenage son along!)

We returned to shore just in time for the end of the Ghana vs Uruguay game which had a heartbreaking miss of a penalty kick by Ghana at the end of overtime and then PK's. While watching the game and feeling the excitement of the World Cup, largely thanks to Netherlands fan support, we started talking about a trip to Rio in 2014 for the next tournament (who’s with us!!?? planning will start in 2011...stay tuned!). We finished out the night with a walk around the Haarlem district and then returned back for bedtime and resting up for the Tour de France. Lindsay was especially pumped for race day!
