Last weekend Brian, our friend Katherine, and I attended Oktoberfest by the Bay at Fort Mason in San Francisco. Fort Mason was formerly used by the military and they set up the Oktoberfest festivities in what looks to be an old garage or something along those lines.
They set up tons of picnic tables in the center of the space and the vendors are around the perimeter. Basically you walk in, buy beer and food, and settle in to a table for a few hours.
We had a great time "people watching," drinking German beer, eating pretzels and brats, listening to the German band and making friends with the people sitting around us. I'm sure it's nothing like the real Oktoberfest, but we still had a great time.
